Party Eyes Wallace The American Independent Party is "keeping the opinion open" for Gov. George Wallace of Alabama to be its presidential candidate again in 1976. With that thought in mind, the party's national committee has scheduled a meeting in Chicago Aug. 10-11, according to William K. Shearer, chairman.
Shearer also will meet with representatives of the news media in Chicago Thursday to discuss the possibilities of the Wallace candidacy. "IF WALLACE is to seek the presidency in 1976, it will have to be as the American Independent Party candidate. I do not believe the Democrat Party is structured so the governor can win its presidential nomination," Shearer said. "There has been increased interest in our party by the news media, the academic community, and voters of all persuasions, including labor and ethnic minorities. "More and more Americans are realizing that it speaks for the majority of the people, the hard working, law abiding, productive, taxpaying citizens who constitute the strength of America, and whose views generally are ignored by the professional politicians of the old, established he added.
The role of the American Independent Party in the 1976 presidential campaign, the various state campaigns this year, and a variety of organizational matters will be discussed at the Chicago meeting, Shearer said. THE PARTY'S Iowa convention is scheduled for Aug. 17 in Des Moines. Robert Dilley, Des Moines, state chairman, has indicated he will not seek a spot on the party's ballot this year. He has headed the ticket as candidate for the U.S.
Senate or governor for several years. Dilley said recently he will step aside for Ralph Scott, Cedar Falls, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican senatorial nomination two years ago.
