In This IssueTRAIL PicksWILD CAMPING WINWe’re still celebrating the successful appeal against a ruling that saw the right to camp under the Dartmoor Commons Act repealed. The case hinged on whether wild camping counted as open-air recreation, and the Court of Appeal panel eventually agreed with the Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) and Open Spaces Society that it does. The British Mountaineering Council is now calling for a 12-month trial where wild camping is permitted on open access land across several different National Parks in England and Wales, saying: “We want to see more land open to respectful, responsible, legal wild camping. It is time to clarify the laws around wild camping.”VIEW WITH A ROOM LANDPODS, YHA ESKDALEThe YHA has always excelled at well-priced accommodation in handily placed hillwalking locations, and in recent…2 min

I pass halfway on my ‘Trail of 100 Nights’ this month and have been joined by two camping buddies with lists of very different lengths.Galloway nightsA tricky, rocky path mixed with bog and turned into an obstacle course by deforestation trucks makes the first half of the climb on Merrick hard going. “This one has been on my bucket list for a long time,” says Jay. And he has a lot of lists – Wainwrights, Munros, Nuttalls, Hewitts and, of course, the Trail 100. Once you enter the montane zone it’s a different story – magnificent views over a Tolkienesque landscape, uninhabited by people, perhaps only by elves…3 min
