To ensure fairness in grading, it’s crucial to clearly communicate the criteria and standards to students. Criteria are the qualities used to judge something, while standards represent specific levels of achievement or performance.

Educational institutions often use criteria and standards to ensure consistent and reliable assessment. Students should know what is expected of them before they submit their work and be assessed based on those expectations. Simply giving students criteria and standards is not enough; providing them with lesson exemplars helps them understand these expectations better.

In criterion-referenced assessment, students need to understand the learning goals and how to achieve them to earn high grades. They should focus on effort, study skills and the right procedures. Using exemplars helps students engage with these goals and improve their performance.
